Living Yoga’s Mission Statement
Living Yoga is a non-profit 501(c)(3) outreach program teaching yoga as a tool for personal change to populations who would otherwise not have access to it. Yoga is invaluable for rehabilitation and recovery; it develops the skills of mindfulness, impulse control, discernment in decision-making and emotional regulation, as well as interpersonal relationship skills. We extend our service to prisons, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, battered women’s shelters, low-income and homeless resource services, and disadvantaged youth.
We recognize that the populations we serve have something in common: they are all imprisoned in some way. Some live behind walls and barbed wire, others in the personal prisons created by addiction and abuse. Some of our students bring all of these challenges to the yoga mat.
As they open to the grace of yoga, we see them stepping into new ways of being; developing balance, flexibility, strength and freedom in their lives.
It is our hope that all of our students will become better able to contribute to the communities in which they live now and the community they will re-enter. Recognizing that the ability to contribute to the lives around you means first valuing one’s own life, our teachers make every effort to enhance the self-awareness, self-esteem and life-affirming decision making skills for the students in our programs.
